Phone calls from the dead

Phone calls from the dead are one of the strangest and most persistent paranormal claims reported around the world. These experiences, often called “after-death communications,” involve people receiving phone calls, voicemails, text messages, or even social media notifications that appear to come from loved ones who have already passed away.

Unlike many ghost stories, these accounts often involve technology, something we tend to trust. That makes them especially unsettling.

Reports usually fall into a few categories:

  • A phone rings, displaying the name or number of a deceased person.
  • Someone answers and hears static, a familiar voice, or a brief message.
  • A voicemail arrives containing unexplained sounds or words.
  • A text message is received from a phone that has been disconnected for months or years.
  • Family members receive calls at significant times, such as birthdays, anniversaries, or shortly after a funeral.

One of the most famous cases comes from 2008, when a woman named Judy Guggenheim, an author who documented after-death communications, collected hundreds of stories from people who claimed they had been contacted through telephones. Many described hearing simple messages such as, “I’m okay,” “I love you,” or “Don’t worry about me.”

Paranormal researchers believe these incidents may occur because spirits manipulate electromagnetic energy. Since cell phones, radios, and telephones all rely on electrical signals, some theorize that they provide an easier way for entities to communicate. This idea is similar to the theories behind EVP recordings and spirit boxes.

Skeptics, however, point to more ordinary explanations. Caller ID errors, spoofed numbers, delayed voicemails, crossed signals, and the human tendency to find meaning during grief can explain many of these experiences. Modern telecommunications systems are incredibly complex, and strange glitches happen more often than most people realize.

Yet some stories remain difficult to explain.

There are accounts of people receiving calls from loved ones moments before learning they had died. Others describe hearing a deceased family member’s voice years after their passing, despite their phone number no longer existing. In a few cases, multiple witnesses reportedly heard the same voice during a speakerphone call.

Perhaps that’s why the phenomenon continues to endure. It sits at the intersection of technology, grief, and the unknown.

If spirits do exist, maybe they aren’t confined to old houses and dark hallways. Maybe they’re finding new ways to reach us through the devices we carry every day.

And the next time your phone rings late at night, and the caller ID shows a name that shouldn’t be possible…
