The Backrooms is a modern internet horror legend that first appeared online in 2019. It describes an endless maze of yellow rooms, stained carpet, buzzing fluorescent lights, and a constant feeling that something is terribly wrong. The original story claimed that if you’re unlucky enough to slip out of reality in the wrong place, you’ll end up there.

The most recognizable version is known as Level 0. It consists of seemingly endless office-like hallways with yellow wallpaper, damp carpet, and the overwhelming hum of fluorescent lights. There are no windows. No exits. No clear direction. Just millions of square miles of empty rooms stretching forever.

What makes The Backrooms so unsettling is that it is a “liminal space.” A liminal space is a place that feels familiar but strangely empty, like a school hallway at midnight, an abandoned mall, or a vacant office building. These locations create a sense of nostalgia and unease at the same time. The Backrooms became one of the most famous examples of liminal horror on the internet.

As the legend spread, thousands of people expanded the mythology. New levels were added, each with its own rules, environments, and dangers. Some levels resemble endless hotels, flooded hallways, abandoned neighborhoods, industrial tunnels, or impossible cities. Many are said to contain strange entities that stalk anyone unfortunate enough to wander into their territory.

One of the reasons The Backrooms became so popular is that it taps into a universal fear, the fear of being lost in a place that should feel normal but doesn’t. There are no obvious monsters in the original concept. The horror comes from isolation, confusion, and the feeling that reality itself is broken.

In 2022, filmmaker Kane Parsons, also known as Kane Pixels, created a found-footage YouTube series that brought The Backrooms to life. His realistic videos became a viral sensation and eventually inspired a feature film adaptation produced by A24.

Today, The Backrooms has evolved from a simple creepypasta into a piece of modern digital folklore. Whether viewed as an internet urban legend, a horror universe, or a metaphor for anxiety and isolation, it remains one of the most influential horror stories ever created online.
